Downtown Southmoor, the most modernized part of the island and where much of the local industrial wealth has been concentrated, contains neighborhoods built mostly in the Second Empire style. Further north and around the docks, one encounters older colonial buildings that have been left intact, including some mansions that have existed since the time of the Revolutionary War. There are also some 'new money' homes on large estates backed by marshy, forested areas.

White and pastel tones are popular colors for newer homes.

Lawrence's house resembles the one below.

The current Southmoor council building has been in use for about five years. It was built through donations by the industrialists using the island--largely as an attempt to gain good publicity--and is in Greek Revival style. Prior to its opening, the council met in a rather dilapidated colonial-era building.
It is gas-lit, has indoor plumbing, and can be found in District 1, Southmoor's downtown area north of the docks.

With the rise of coal mining and machining in Southmoor came the slums, populated mainly by African-Americans and European immigrants. They are concentrated in legislative Districts 3 and 8.

Pictures of the slums are found here.
